Possessed and fascinated by the ongoing NFT boom, that saw digital artist Beeple sell an NFT for $69 million at Christie's and some so-called CryptoPunks being sold for over $7 million, contemporary artist Boudino de Jong decided to launch an NFT parody of his own, which he coined 'CryptoBlokes'. The digital project was created to be featured in an NFT insights article by the digital agency Profound, and features pixelated (48x48) characters representing some of his colleagues at the agency. As he put it, "the best way to come to grasps with this new world is to actually dive right in and go through the wormhole. What better way of accomplishing this by rolling out your very own rare NFT collectibles".
NFTs, non-fungible tokens, are stored data units on a digital ledger, a blockchain, that certifies a digital asset to be unique and not interchangeable. NFTs can be used to represent digital assets such as images, videos, audio, and other sorts of digital media.
De Jong released the so-called CryptoBlokes as an experiment into the NFT realm. The idea is to see these rare digital collectibles appreciate in value, ultimately becoming the first NFTs to surpass the value of a billion dollars. One can literally follow the journey of these CryptoBlokes as they go from broke to billionaires. Crazy right? Well, what might seem like a crazy concept is continuously being challenged when it comes to NFTs and crypto. "Ultimately this is a form of expression, perhaps a bit ludicrous, but that's where the fun is at. Shouldn't art be about having good old fun?".
The CryptoBlokes collection page on OpenSea describes the project as: "The CryptoBlokes are the first NFT created with the goal of becoming billionaires. Collect them, as they go from broke to billionaires. A fixed set of 20, they were launched in 2021 amidst the NFT (ERC-721) craze. They were sent on a mission by contemporary artist Boudino de Jong and represent himself and colleagues from the digital agency where he works."
Further assessing the unique 20 CryptoBlokes, it becomes apparent that some can be currently purchased for as low as 0.1 ETH and the most valued one available at the moment being CryptoBloke #2: Tio at a price of 9 ETH. Interestingly, the CryptoBloke representing the artist himself, CryptoBloke #1: Boeboebs, is currently not available for sale.
For now, the project has been published. All that remains to be seen is when the buying spree will start and catapult these blokes from broke to billionaire. Will you become one of the first to own a CryptoBloke?
